| Shangri-la:
Lost Horizon in Zhongdian
Shangri-la, a popular
word after World War II and one frequnetly
adopted by stores, hotels and restaurants,
signifies a "heaven away from the turmoil
of the mundane word". Actually, "Shangri-la"
is a Tibetan word which means "land
of sacredness and peace."

main scene of Lufeng is the
dinosaur fossil, a provincial

Ramapithecus fossil. The scenic

fossil at Shihuiba and Wutai
Mountain, with an area of 50
square kilometers.

Yong must be the most popular writer
in China. His Kungfu novels are loved
by people from all walks of life.
In Jin Yong's Novels, Dali is undoubtedly
an important place. It was the capital
of the Nanzhao Kingdom from the 8th
thru 13th centuries. "Yi Yang Finger"
and "Magic Six-Finger Sword",
which could only be practiced and mastered
by the members of royal family of the
Nanzhao Kingdom, represent one of the
highest achievements of Chinese martial
arts. |

Customs of Lijiang
Lijiang, the land
of music and dance, possesses various
colourful folk customs. The eleven
nationalities in the district, Naxi,
Yi, Lisu, Pumi, Bai, Dai, Miao, Zhuang,

with diverse flavors.

The
U.S. Flying Tigers in
wartime Kunming
More
than 50 years ago, Kunming
was one of the hubs of
World War II. Hundreds
of thousands of Americans
fought alongside the Chinese
against the Japanese invaders.
Together, they pushed
the " Burma Road
" through the jungles
from Kunming to Mandalay.
Among the American forces
were the " Flying
Tigers ", the American
Pilots, who flew lumbering
transports over "
the Hump " of the
Himalayas into the airfield
west of the city.

The
best of Chinese gardens and the whole world
just in Expo'99 venue |

With
the theme "Man and nature, marching to
21st century", 95 countries and international
organizations will be participating and 9.5
million people visiting the 184-day Expo '99.
The expo is expected to set records for the
number of participants and for the total area
of the exhibition gardens and permanent exhibition
facilities. Although the curtain has fallen
on Expo'99, the World Horti-Expo Garden has
retained its original appearance and is now
being further upgraded to become an even greater
horticultural wonder. Construction on three
theme gardens, "World Famous Flower Garden",
"Unusual Flowers and Rare Plants Garden"
and " Fantastic Rocks Garden" has
already been begun.
